The Salter’s Chemistry Camp offered 50 places to GCSE students, from schools UK-wide, to particapte in a week long programme of chemistry practicals in the university labs. Two camps run each summer for 7 years delivered a chemistry experience to a total of 700 students. Experiments included synthesis of paracetamol and aspirin, the Brigss-Rauscher, iodate-peroxide oscillating reaction, chemiluminescence of siloxene under oxidation, determination of copper in coins via UV-Vis absorption of the sulphate complex. Sussex Chemistry teaching labs. A number of students returned after A levels to take up the MChem, often highlighting their experience at Salters’ Camp in the UCAS personal statement. Successful organisation and delivering of the outreach programme required liaison with the Salters’ Institute, university accommodation and catering services, lab technicians and student ambassadors.
